Lip fillers in San Diego
Lip filler is the treatment most associated with injectables and the one most often done badly. The difference between a result that reads as "well rested" and one that reads as "had her lips done" is almost never the product — it is how much was used, where it was placed, and whether the injector was willing to say no.

What lip filler can change
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule the body already makes, which holds many times its own weight in water. Injected as a gel it adds volume where it is placed and draws in a little water around it.
Volume — fuller lips, in the upper, lower or both
Definition — a sharper vermilion border, a more defined cupid’s bow
Hydration and texture — smoother, less dry-looking lip surface
Balance — correcting an upper and lower lip that are noticeably out of proportion
Fine vertical lines above the lip, when they are caused by volume loss rather than sun damage
What it will not change
Filler adds volume. It does not lift, and it does not shorten. A long upper lip, a heavy overhang of the upper lip over the teeth, or a smile that shows very little tooth are structural and are not filler problems — adding product to any of them makes the underlying issue more obvious, not less.
It also will not remove deep, etched vertical lip lines caused by years of sun exposure and smoking. Those are a skin-quality problem; resurfacing addresses them, filler does not.
If your concern is that your lips turn down at the corners, that is usually the depressor muscles pulling them down, and a small amount of neurotoxin is the correct tool rather than filler.
How much product a natural result takes
Less than most people expect. A full syringe is one millilitre — about a fifth of a teaspoon — and for a first lip treatment, half to one syringe is typical. Two syringes into lips that have never been treated is how the obviously-done look happens.
Building over two or three appointments spaced a few weeks apart is slower and produces better results, because each stage settles before the next is judged. It also means you can stop at the point you like rather than discovering you have gone past it.
What to expect on the day and after
Most hyaluronic acid fillers used in lips contain lidocaine, and a topical numbing cream is applied first. The treatment itself takes around half an hour.
Lips swell more than anywhere else on the face. Expect noticeable swelling for two to three days and some bruising, and expect the lips to look larger than the final result during that time. Judge your outcome at two weeks, not at two days — do not book this in the week of an event.
Reversibility, and why it matters
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. That is a genuine safety feature rather than a marketing point: if a result is not what you wanted, or in the rare event of a vascular complication, there is a way back.
It is also why we do not use permanent or semi-permanent fillers in lips. A material that cannot be removed has to be right the first time, and lips change over a lifetime.
Who should not have lip filler
Lip filler is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have an active cold sore or skin infection at the injection site, if you have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid products or lidocaine, or if you have a bleeding disorder.
If you get cold sores frequently, tell us before treatment. Injection can trigger an outbreak, and it is a straightforward thing to pre-empt.

How long does lip filler last?
Hyaluronic acid lip filler typically lasts six to twelve months. Lips are a mobile, well-supplied area, so filler tends to break down faster there than in the cheeks or jawline.
How much filler do I need for a natural look?
For a first lip treatment, half to one syringe — one syringe is one millilitre — is typical. Building gradually over two or three appointments spaced several weeks apart produces a more natural result than placing a large volume at once.
Does lip filler hurt?
A topical numbing cream is applied first and most hyaluronic acid lip fillers contain lidocaine, so the treatment is generally described as uncomfortable rather than painful. It takes around thirty minutes.
How long does lip filler swelling last?
Expect significant swelling for two to three days and some bruising. Lips swell more than any other area of the face. The result settles over about two weeks, which is when it should be judged.
Can lip filler be dissolved?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, usually within a day or two. This is one of the reasons hyaluronic acid is used in lips rather than a permanent material.
Will lip filler fix lines above my lip?
Sometimes. Fine vertical lines caused by volume loss often improve. Deep, etched lines caused by years of sun exposure or smoking are a skin-quality problem and filler does not remove them.
