Vitamin injections deliver a nutrient intramuscularly rather than through the digestive tract. Beauty Factory SD in San Diego offers B12 and glutathione injections. An injection takes a few minutes with no downtime, and it is most clearly useful where absorption through the gut is impaired or a genuine deficiency has been identified.

What it achieves depends almost entirely on whether you were short of the thing being injected. That distinction is the whole of this page, and it is the one most often left out of how these are marketed.

What injection changes about a vitamin

Anything swallowed has to survive the stomach and be absorbed across the gut wall, and for some nutrients in some people that process is unreliable. An injection bypasses it entirely — the full dose reaches the bloodstream.

That is a real advantage in specific circumstances and no advantage at all in others. Someone absorbing B12 normally from food and supplements gets very little additional benefit from injecting it; someone who cannot absorb it gets a great deal.

B12

B12 is required for red blood cell formation, nerve function and DNA synthesis. Genuine deficiency causes fatigue, weakness, pins and needles, and in prolonged cases neurological problems, and correcting it produces a real and sometimes dramatic improvement.

Absorption depends on a stomach protein called intrinsic factor, and it fails in a number of common situations: pernicious anaemia, after gastric surgery, with long-term metformin or acid-suppressing medication, and to some extent with age. Strict vegan and vegetarian diets are a dietary rather than absorptive cause.

⚠️ If you have no deficiency, injecting B12 does not create additional energy. The body excretes what it does not need. It is worth measuring rather than assuming — a blood level is a cheap answer to the question.

Glutathione

Glutathione is an antioxidant the body produces, involved in detoxification pathways in the liver and in neutralising oxidative stress.

It is widely marketed for skin brightening and general wellness. The evidence for injected glutathione is limited, and it is not an FDA-approved treatment for skin lightening or for any cosmetic indication. We are not going to tell you otherwise.

It is offered because patients ask for it and it is well tolerated. If your interest in it is skin tone, that is a conversation worth having at consultation about what actually addresses pigmentation.

What to expect

A few minutes, a small intramuscular injection, and no downtime. Some soreness at the injection site is normal.

Where a course is appropriate, injections are usually spaced by weeks rather than days. The interval depends on what is being given and why.

Who should raise it first

  • Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Anyone with a known allergy to the injection or its preservatives

  • Anyone with kidney disease, where dosing considerations differ

  • Anyone taking a medication that interacts — worth checking rather than assuming

  • Anyone whose main symptom is persistent fatigue, which deserves a workup rather than an injection

Questions about vitamin injections

Are B12 injections better than tablets?

They are, where absorption through the gut is impaired — after gastric surgery, with pernicious anaemia, or on long-term metformin or acid-suppressing medication. If you absorb B12 normally, an oral supplement achieves much the same thing.

Will a B12 injection give me more energy?

If you are deficient, correcting the deficiency usually improves fatigue substantially. If you are not deficient, it does not add energy — the body excretes what it does not need. A blood level answers the question cheaply, and it is worth measuring rather than assuming.

What does a glutathione injection do?

Glutathione is an antioxidant involved in the body’s detoxification pathways. It is widely marketed for skin brightening; the evidence for injected glutathione is limited and it is not FDA-approved for skin lightening or any cosmetic indication.

How often can I have vitamin injections?

Where a course is appropriate, injections are generally spaced by weeks rather than days. The right interval depends on what is being given and why, and is decided at consultation.

Do vitamin injections hurt?

It is a small intramuscular injection, usually in the arm, taking a few minutes. Some soreness at the site afterwards is normal and there is no downtime.
